University Police Officer

Muskingum University invites applications for a University Police Officer. The ideal candidate will report directly to the University Chief of Police and protect the people and property of the Muskingum University campus as a member of the University Policy Department.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in daily operations of safety and security to maintain law and order in campus community
Parking enforcement and traffic control (including ticketing and towing).
Provide appropriate investigation/apprehension and follow-up to acts against federal, state or county statutes and University policies.
Enforce established policies and regulations of Muskingum University, including those contained in the Student Handbook.
Assist in training, scheduling, counseling, and supervision of student assistants.
Maintain appropriate records, comprehensive reports and necessary documentation.
Provide fire, tornado drills and training, drug/alcohol abuse seminars, also conduct general campus safety related training programs.
Communicate with University Police Chief on personal knowledge of campus irregularities regarding safety and security (Includes students, faculty, staff, and all facilities).
Assist in campus compliance with government regulations.
Cooperate and enhance relationship between campus and local police departments.
Assist in care and maintenance of all equipment assigned to UPD.
Routine patrol of campus/lock and unlock offices and facilities as scheduled.
Assist in coordination of traffic control for special events.
Assist in daily department operations (includes: Issuing of parking stickers, room openings, lost and found).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Current certification through Ohio Peace Officers Council as law enforcement officer.
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of professional law enforcement methods and operations.
Ability to judge and administer the responsibilities of this position with fairness, impartiality, and without malice.
Ability to relate with University students.
Ability to develop knowledge of University policies and procedures.
Current firearms qualification as required by OPOTA.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Duties may require occasional evening and weekend work.
Work is almost always outdoors patrolling, but often work indoors while writing reports.
Work in a vehicle daily, such as a patrol car.
Often exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting and uncomfortable.
Often wear specialized protective or safety attire.
May be exposed to hazardous conditions and situations, such as moving traffic.
May be exposed to hazardous equipment.
May be exposed to contaminants.
May be exposed to very hot or cold temperatures while working outdoors.
May be exposed to extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
May have to get into awkward positions to complete a task.
Often work near people.
