Min T/E Requirements:
  • A doctorate in business or education from a nationally accredited institution is required

Primary Purpose of Organization Unit:
The Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer under the Chancellor, and is responsible for the leadership, review, and approval of all academic programs and policies and the appointment, promotion and compensation of the faculty. In addition to the Universitys seven colleges and schools (Arts and Sciences, Thomas School of Business, School of Education, College of Health Sciences, Maynor Honors College, University College, and the Graduate School), the Office of the Provosts divisions include academic resources, library services, enrollment management, institutional research; planning and accreditation, and global engagement.

Primary Purpose of Position:
Reporting to the Provost, and working under the general direction of the Provost, the Deputy Provost (Chief of Staff to the Provost) (hereinafter Deputy Provost) is part of the Academic Affairs leadership team and assists the Provost and the senior staff in the operation of the Office of the Provost. The Deputy Provost works collaboratively with the Provost and University leadership in advancing the strategic vision, mission, and values of the institution, including the realization of the Universitys strategic plan.
The Deputy Provost will assist the Provost in guiding Academic Affairs through bold leadership; the cultivation of an engaged and collaborative team; the establishment of positive working relationships across University divisions; and the recruitment, development, and retention of a diverse and forward-thinking faculty and staff.
The Deputy Provost provides dynamic academic and data-informed strategic leadership for Academic Affairs, with broad vision, and balanced judgment and creativity. The Deputy Provost provides strategic direction for and promoting excellence and integrity in undergraduate, graduate, and professional education in various instructional modalities; increasing and supporting faculty and student research endeavors; external partnerships, programs, initiatives; and coordinates regional, national, and international activities to support the mission and priorities of the University.
The Deputy Provost will work closely and collaboratively with senior personnel in all Academic Affairs units on strategic planning efforts and is engaged with policy development and implementation. Additional areas of responsibility include financial, human resources, and capital planning for the division and compliance with the UNC System Office, state, and federal regulations, policies, and guidelines.
The Deputy Provost will provide secondary oversight over Enrollment Management (Admissions, Financial Aid, and the Registrars Office), the Graduate School, Global Engagement, the Office of Institutional Research, and the Office of Sponsored Research.

Job Description:

Administrative and Organizational (10%)
  • Serve as designee in the absence of the Provost, representing the Provost and views with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Communicate and collaborate with the UNC System Office to further the mission and strategic goals of UNC Pembroke
  • Represent the Provost in absence

Vision and Strategic Planning (45%)
  • Works collaboratively with the Provost to develops a Strategic Plan for Academic Affairs and on operational and space management, human resources matters, and budget allocations for all reporting units
  • Work with the Provost and the Office of Advancement to support the University's fundraising campaign. Enlist the deans, department chairs, and faculty in engaging, cultivating, soliciting, and developing stewardship strategies for donors
  • Promote communication and collaboration among constituents and ensure broad participation in shared governance
  • Develop, cultivate, and track external academic, business, and community partnerships
  • Work with the Communications and Marketing Department to develop multi-faceted and targeted programmatic and thematic marketing plans that identify appropriate prospective student markets and provide proposed marketing strategies for every academic program
  • Work collaboratively with the Dean of the Graduate School and the Communications and Marketing Department to increase graduate student enrollment, retention, and services at the University
  • Develop a plan for Global Engagement to: better coordinate academic and administrative efforts in developing the University's international activities across its schools; further develop and coordinate the University's international enrollment management and admissions initiatives; better handle visa and immigration services; review international endeavors to minimize potential risks and liabilities; and set policies to establish best practices. As a result, the University should achieve further internationalization through strategic increases in international enrollments, study abroad programs, and growth in dual degree and exchange programs.

Business Operations and Resource Leadership and Management (45%)
  • Responsible for working with the academic deans on faculty hiring plans and related enrollment and financial projections to be reviewed/approved by Provost
  • Improves leadership and administrative abilities in academic units by assisting in mentoring and evaluating deans, department chairs, and other academic administrators, and supports endeavors that assist academic administrators in carrying out their duties and responsibilities
  • Assures fairness and the application of appropriate procedures by assisting with employee grievances in Academic Affairs through investigating, gathering information, and reporting findings to the Provost
  • Oversees staff recruitment and hiring, and reviews personnel action forms for compliance with University policies, processes, and procedures
  • Policy development, revision, and implementation to promote academic excellence, student success, and institutional integrity
  • The Deputy Provost will provide leadership over the AVC for Enrollment Management to develop integrated, multi-faceted, and targeted enrollment strategies for the University to increase undergraduate student applications, acceptances, and matriculation at the University. This includes secondary oversight over Admissions, Financial Aid, and the Office of the Registrar policies, processes, timelines, and communication strategies.
  • Working with the deans, department chairs, and faculty, assess the University's academic admissions standards, and revise admissions criteria to reflect differentiated criteria for each academic program as well as for the University's Honors Program to offer exceptional students a more intensive program of undergraduate study
  • Provide oversight of the University's Office of Institutional Research and work with the Director to foster a culture of data-driven decision-making at the University. This includes: the conducting of market research to support new program development; the creation of admissions and enrollment dashboards for each academic program to make investing and divestiture decisions; and the development of a course scheduling dashboard to support the academic departments in improving course availability, particularly for high-demand and gateway courses, to reduce student time-to-graduation
  • Review and approve all sponsored research projects at the University, in consultation with the Provost
  • Facilitate a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds

Management Preference:
  • Proficiency in and proponent of data-based decision-making is preferred. Experience in data collection, data-sharing, reporting, and progress reports is preferred. The ability to use data and data analytic tools to guide institutional and program effectiveness and monitor progress relative to specific annual and long-term goals is preferred. The ability to effectively communicate results of institutional assessment to constituencies and provide recommendations to achieve and exceed strategic goals is preferred.
