University Police Services, Southern Command invites applications for Community Service Officers (CSO) (Classification - Security Officer, Title Series - 11.260) [R0133753]. We appreciate your interest in employment at our growing division.

ROLE of the POSITION

University Police Services is conducting a continuous recruitment for current and future openings for Community Service Officers (CSO). Positions may be assigned to any campus to include the College of Southern Nevada, Desert Research Institute, Nevada State College, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Under direction of the Community Service Supervisor, this position will perform a variety of security related tasks for various NSHE campuses under University Police Services, Southern Command.

Our mission, together with the students, faculty and staff of NSHE's Southern Nevada institutions and our surrounding communities, is to provide a safe environment for living and learning for our students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Every member in the University Police Services will strive to accomplish each of the following goals:
  • Reduce the crimes committed in University Police Services Southern Command's jurisdiction through a constant and vigilant Law Enforcement effort by all Police and support personnel.
  • Involve the community in all policing activities and soliciting public input into the development of policy which directly impacts the quality of community life.
  • Manage Department and NSHE resources in prudent and productive ways.
  • Recruit and retain qualified and motivated police and support personnel.


PROFILE

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) was established in 1865 and is currently comprised of two doctoral-granting universities, a state college, four comprehensive community colleges and one environmental research institute. The public system of higher education in Nevada is governed by the Board of Regents serving over 100,000 students and 15,000 employees.

University Police Services, Southern Command, is a full service category I law enforcement agency that serves the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the College of Southern Nevada, the Desert Research Institute and Nevada State College. The department consists of 163 employees and has responsibility for the public safety needs of 80,000 students, faculty and staff over an 800 square mile service area. Law enforcement operations consists of 80 full and part time sworn peace officers, a full service 9-1-1 Center, K-9 operations; emergency management operations with a fully functional EOC and oversight of major special events hosting more than a million visitors a year to various events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

CSO responsibilities will include but not be limited to providing security for State buildings and grounds; providing protective services to buildings and occupants; enforcing applicable laws, rules, regulations and policies; maintaining security of assigned buildings or facilities and surrounding property by conducting visual surveillance through camera monitors or direct observation; monitoring State/NSHE property, displays and individuals entering and leaving buildings and take appropriate action according to department policy. Patrolling buildings and grounds, checking windows, locks, doors and security systems for damage or possible breach of security; following established procedures and guidelines when security or safety violations occur and other general duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience in public contact work which included applying and implementing rules, regulations or established policies. (See Special Requirements)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
  • Some positions required working on evening, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • A valid driver's license is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Some positions require certification in CPR at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Some positions require first aid certification at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Provide quality service to the University students, faculty, staff and members of the public in regards to safety and security (i.e. Lost and Found property, Security Escorts, building and vehicle lock outs, disabled vehicles, medical response, etc.)
  • Respond to non-violent calls for service
  • Observe and Report all suspicious and criminal activity
  • Traffic control
  • Performing security checks, building inspections, guarding entry points, verifying visitors (this may include inspecting fire extinguishers, fire/security alarms, etc.)
  • Extra security during University events and special details
  • Mitigate any threats, issues or concerns that might hinder or harm people and property
  • Operate and monitor surveillance equipment
  • Assigned to a post as needed
  • Operate assigned transportation vehicles as needed
  • Participate in any and all training that is mandatory for the role of CSO
  • Completing designated reports and proper documentation
  • Abide and adhere to the Policies and Procedures as stated in the University Police Services Southern Company Policy Manual
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Excellent management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, problem solve, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

SALARY

Grade 27 Step 1, salary $ 37,166.40. "Step" means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
