Job Description

University Police Services is recruiting for an Assistant Vice President with strong leadership skills to work with multiple stakeholders. The AVP/Director engages students, faculty and the public to embrace our community oriented policing philosophy. The AVP/Director cultivates strong relationships with other law enforcement agencies to meet the University Police Services goal of providing a safe and secure environment for our students, faculty, staff and visitors.

The Assistant Vice President is the chief law enforcement official for the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC), Western Nevada College (WNC), Great Basin College (GBC) and Desert Research Institute (DRI-northern campus), ensuring that UNR, TMCC, GBC, DRI - northern campus, WNC and associated entities are provided with adequate protective services to ensure a safe and secure environment.

The position is responsible for all facets and functions of the Police unit, including but not limited to, development for planning and budget, formulating policy, allocation of resources, supervision of staff, law enforcement discretion, as well as liaison with other law enforcement agencies, media, students, faculty and staff. The department plays an integral role in violence prevention, emergency management and enhancing public safety services.

The successful candidate is expected to provide leadership in the performance of the responsibilities of the position in order to insure the success and credibility of the department's work and the reputations of the institutions involved as well as the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). The position works directly with the presidents of each institution and makes independent decisions regarding establishment of the appropriate level of protective services to ensure a safe and secure environment and must regulate the degree of protective services available to the institutions and their populations.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and seven (7) years of related managerial experience, OR

Master's Degree and five (5) years of related managerial experience, OR

Doctorate Degree and three (3) years of related managerial experience

Related Experience: In law enforcement line operations and related administrative and supervisory positions including but not limited to specialized training in such fields as special event coordination and planning, disaster planning, risk management, and human resource management and development.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience at an institution of higher education with on-site residence halls

Certification and Licensure

A valid Nevada State Driver's License within 30 days of hire

Nevada (or comparable) P.O.S.T. Certification

Candidate will be required to pass standard State Police Officer physical agility and law-enforcement psychological examinations

The total compensation package includes a negotiable competitive salary, moving allowance (if applicable), a rich retirement plan, health insurance options that include dental and vision, life insurance, long-term disability, thirty (30) days of sick leave provided upon start date and two (2) days of sick leave accrued per full month after the first year of service, two (2) days of annual leave accrued each full month, along with many other benefits.
