Whitman seeks to hire a Director of Security who reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students. The Office of Security play key role in ensuring the safety of students, faculty and staff members, and visitors to campus.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Director of Security provides leadership, oversight and management of the College's Security Department. Reporting to the Dean of Students, this position has a high level of visibility and engagement with the campus, other parties, and with senior campus leadership, and works positively and effectively with college students, staff, and faculty in all aspects of campus security. The Director of Security's work is focused on emphasizing customer service, education, public relations and enhanced security. The Director directly supports the College's strategic initiatives including community, inclusion, diversity and equity through personal conduct and commitment, leadership of the department and engagement within the community.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  1. Provide Leadership, oversight and management of the College's Security Department and security related functions. Develop and implement strategies, policies, communications, and processes for the department. Manage the effective and appropriate use of departmental resources, including staffing, budget planning and expenditures and payroll reporting.
  2. Provide technical expertise to the College regarding campus safety and security related matters.
  3. Effectively collaborate with College community members, including leadership, staff, faculty, students, and other relevant non-College entities (such as local and state law enforcement agencies and fire department) to support and further the department's objectives. Work with various members to identify their security needs and deliver appropriate services.
  4. Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve the goals and vision of the Security Department. Supervisory responsibilities include the hiring processes, setting of expectations, training and professional development, performance management and evaluations, and disciplinary processes, including termination of employment.
  5. Direct student security force, leadership, and training to Student Security Escorts and Dispatch programs.
  6. Oversee the enforcement of campus rules. Ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws, as well as regulations concerning health, safety and security. In particular, ensure compliance with Student's Right to Know Act, the Drug-Free School and Community Act, and the Clery Crime Act. Compile, write, and distribute College crime statistics for the Annual Security Report and the Clery Crime Act. Provide security training for students, faculty and staff.
  7. Serve as Incident Commander in the College's Emergency Response Plan and serve on the Leadership Team to help the College be prepared for emergencies.
  8. Participate various meetings as necessary, including weekly Care Team meetings and serve on the Deans Council.
  9. Contribute to campus safety and security related areas as requested, including, risk management, emergency preparedness, crisis management, venue and event safety, traffic safety, transportation and parking, and Title IX-related areas.
  10. Oversee and/or conduct investigations related to or assigned to the Security Department.
  11. Other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Individuals must be able to explain and/or demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  1. Ability to work with a diverse population of students, staff and faculty.
  2. Ability to supervise staff officers and temporary officers.
  3. Ability to work closely with all college constituencies on a regular basis and in emergencies.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  5. Ability to operate the computer, prepare reports and oversee the budget.
  6. Ability to work closely with local police and fire agencies.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Frequently: sit, perform desk-based computer tasks; use fine manipulation and grasp; use a telephone write by hand; sort and file paperwork.
  2. Frequently: drive a vehicle, stand, walk, and run.
  3. Frequently: ability to attend meetings, events, and activities on or off campus.
  4. Frequently: ability to interact and communicate with members of the community and others, as necessary.
  5. As necessary: ability to work long, irregular or flexible hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends holidays and during shut down periods, as necessitated by projects, situations, or other matters. The regular work day is 8 am - 5 pm.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor's degree and at least two years of security and/or criminal justice experience
  2. Active Driver's License
