Location
Our Kennesaw campus is located at 1000 Chastain Road NW, Kennesaw, GA 30144. Our Marietta campus is located at 1100 South Marietta Parkway, Marietta, GA 30060.
Department Information
MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW AND/OR INSTITUTION:
Must successfully complete and maintain required K-9 handler training and certification in accordance with university, public safety, USG, and other regulatory policies and applicable state
standards
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Reports directly to canine Sergeant
2. Conducts sterility sweeps of large and/or high-profile events
3. May be exposed to airborne particles, body fluids and chemical solutions
4. Complies with state law and local ordinances for securing canines when outside of the residence, and maintain an appropriate area within the residence for kenneling canine during non-working hours
5. Responsible for dog's health and safety at all times
6. Must live within a one-hour response time of Kennesaw State University's Kennesaw campus, generally no more than 50 miles
7. Responsible for maintenance of all special equipment issued including motor vehicle
8. Responsible for all canine training and keeping dog at acceptable level of readiness
9. Subject to call out anytime outside regularly scheduled shift hours or approved leave including days, nights, and weekends
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
* Able to walk and/or run in extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time
* Able to work in environments that may include loud noises, urgent time deadlines, uncontrollable interruptions, and the need to frequently shift attention
* Able to successfully complete and maintain required K 9 handler training and certification
* Able to accept hours and days assigned by Special Operations
* Position requires a flexible work schedule dependent on special events or operational needs of the department, to include exceptionally long hours, working both days, nights, and weekends during a one-week period
* Able to lift at least sixty pounds daily (average weight of police canine)
* Willing and able to expend time and energy to achieve and maintain a high level of proficiency as a canine handler
Job Summary
Mentors, leads and assists with supervision of staff of the University police department as an entry-level member of the leadership staff assigned to a specific operational area of responsibility. In the absence of the assigned supervisor, responsible for supervising enforcement duties involving general and criminal regulations and institutional rules and regulations to provide for the protection, safety, and welfare of students, employees and property within the areas under the control and authorized jurisdiction.
Responsibilities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: -
1. Provides oversight for the management of assigned sworn and non-sworn personnel positions
2. Responsible for supervising enforcement duties involving general and criminal regulations and institutional rules and regulations
3. Provides for the protection, safety and welfare of students, employees and property within the areas under the control and authorized jurisdiction
4. First line report for reviews and approvals, in the absence of the Sergeant
5. Trains and evaluates assigned personnel
6. Exercises authority positively while maintaining discipline within the department
7. Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act)
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent and at least 21 years of age
Other Required Qualifications
Current, valid and unrestricted driver's license
Current Basic Law Enforcement Certification from the Georgia P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training Council) or the ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of employment
Required Experience
Three (3) years of sworn law enforcement experience

POST Intermediate, Advanced, Supervisory, or Managerial Certificate, POST Instructor Certification, POST Designated Instructor Certification, Other Specialty Certifications
Preferred Educational Qualifications
An undergraduate or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a related field

Previous supervisory experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
ABILITIES
Must be committed to and demonstrate successful engagement of the community oriented policing philosophy
Must be able to fulfill all the essential duties of a police officer and to perform the functional role of lower ranks as required
May be expected to serve as a Field Training Officer
May be reassigned to another operational area or section of equal rank
May be required to attend a law enforcement training program at the state, region and/or national level
Able to effectively relate to the public and representatives of other law enforcement agencies
Able to work scheduled shifts (typically 12 hours)
Able to continuously wear and properly gait while wearing the assigned equipment and equipment belt (typically twelve (12) to twenty-five (25) pounds)
Able to maneuver in and out of assigned KSU patrol vehicle(s) throughout the shift
Able to act on and respond to physical altercations
Able to occasionally lift and/or pull one hundred and fifty (150) to three hundred (300) pounds
Able to conduct foot patrol as scheduled, typically three (3) hours per shift
Able to provide patrol shift coverage or supplemental patrol surge staffing and being dispatched to calls for service
Able to handle multiple tasks or projects at one time meeting assigned deadlines
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills
Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e. Microsoft Office suite)
Strong attention to detail and follow up skills
Strong customer service skills and phone and e-mail etiquette
